Spring Snow Storm Sweeps Colorado, Causing Concern for Elk

Just when conditions were getting a little sketchy and we thought it was all coming to an end, Mother Nature came through with a typical Colorado April snow storm.  Overnight, Snowmass Mountain reported 18″ , Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk 17″ and Aspen Mountain reported a whopping 21″ of fresh pow.  Lift operations manager, Andy Christiansen, stated earlier this morning that “Although we’re near the end of spring break season, we’re all super stoked and anticipating a big turn out today and Monday, too.”

While skiers and snowboarders alike could not be more thrilled to have a spring powder day, there is growing concern for how the new snow will affect the area’s large elk population.  Local biologist, Hans Fiffenbacher, explained the situation further.  “Because of the extreme early season warm temperatures, the elk have begun shedding their winter coats much earlier than normal.  The result being they are no longer equipped to face the harsh winter-like elements.  This is a very serious situation and we are highly concerned for their well being.”

Fortunately for the elk, local designer Petey McPoppin, came to their rescue.  McPoppin, who is well known for making the piano sweater famous in the mid 80’s, partnered up with Fiffenbacher to create what they call “the elk snuggie.”  Working all through the night, the McPoppin-Fiffenbacher team and numerous volunteers, were able to make 150 elk snuggies and will be distributing all throughout the day.  The elk snuggie differs from the classic snuggie in that it features a hood with ear/antler holes and a velcro closure at the torso.  McPoppin also included his signature piano keys just below the neckline.

“The response from the public has been amazing,” said Fiffenbacher.  “We received a call at 2:00 this morning with a $10k donation from Blazing Adventures.  We are completely overwhelmed by the response.”
